Secretary General of the Council of Europe (CoE), Alain Berset, and Speaker of the Armenian Parliament, Alen Simonyan, held a meeting to discuss several pressing regional and domestic issues, including the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, as well as the ongoing efforts to establish diplomatic dialogue between Yerevan and Ankara, Report informs.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Alen Simonyan described the conversation as “meaningful,” emphasizing the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation with European institutions.
During the meeting, the two officials exchanged views on the Armenia–Azerbaijan peace process, which has seen renewed momentum in recent months following international mediation efforts. They also discussed the prospects of opening the Armenia–Türkiye border and normalizing ties between the two neighboring countries after decades of strained relations.
Simonyan highlighted the importance of key democratic reforms currently underway in Armenia, noting that these reforms are crucial for strengthening democratic institutions, rule of law, and civil liberties in the country. He expressed appreciation for the Council of Europe’s consistent support in helping Armenia advance its democratic agenda.
Alain Berset reaffirmed the Council of Europe’s readiness to continue supporting Armenia in its reform path, including judicial independence, freedom of expression, and human rights protection. He also emphasized the Council’s commitment to facilitating peaceful dialogue in the South Caucasus and contributing to regional stability.
This meeting underscores the growing role of European institutions in the post-conflict normalization process between Armenia and Azerbaijan, as well as in promoting regional cooperation and integration in line with European values.
