Meta Platforms is considering introducing paid versions of social media platforms Facebook and Instagram that would not feature any advertisements, the New York Times reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the plans.
The paid ad-free subscriptions would be available to users in the European Union, with the sources noting the company is considering the move in response to the bloc's latest regulations for online platforms and recent scrutiny of big tech firms. According to the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the tech giant believes the paid service could address EU's privacy concerns by allowing users to opt out of ad-based services that analyze their data.
The sources did not say how much the subscriptions would cost or when they could be introduced.
