In commemoration of World Press Freedom Day, Umud Mirzayev, president of the International Eurasia Press Fund (IEPF), emphasized the fundamental importance of freedom of speech in democratic societies. Speaking to Ednews, Mr. Mirzayev underscored that the right to speech is a cornerstone of democratic structures and societies, emphasizing its vital role in fostering a happy and cohesive society.

Mr. Mirzayev referenced the decision of the UN General Assembly in 1993, which designated May 3rd as World Press Freedom Day. He highlighted the significance of this day as an opportunity for journalists worldwide to advocate for the unhindered dissemination of information and the joint effort against societal challenges.

IEPF has traditionally celebrated Press Freedom Day as a special occasion since its establishment, with Umud Mirzayev emphasizing the foundation's commitment to solidarity with colleagues in the field. He noted that various events are organized in Azerbaijan on this day, bringing together representatives from state institutions and mass media to discuss the current state of press freedom and avenues for development in the country.
