During an interview with Ednews TV at the 3rd International Conference on Mine Action in Baku, Heidi Kuhn, CEO and Founder of Roots of Peace, recounted a transformative journey of humanitarian efforts in the region of Karabakh. The conference, themed “Mitigating Environmental Impact of Landmines: Resource Mobilization for Safe and Green Future,” provided a platform for Kuhn to share her experiences and aspirations for the region.
In her heartfelt statement, Kuhn described how a humanitarian nonprofit from San Rafael, California, contacted her three years ago, leading to her first visit to Karabakh in March 2022, during International Women's Month. Guided by the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA), Kuhn witnessed the challenges posed by an estimated 1.5 million landmines in the region's vineyard area.
Returning the following year and once again this year, Kuhn observed the progress made in clearing landmines, particularly in the village of Fizuli and Mr. Umud Mirzayev's hometown. She led another delegation, witnessing increased improvements in mine clearance efforts, including the safe clearance of a landing field for airplanes previously mined.
Kuhn highlighted the involvement of women in demining activities and the repatriation of families to their villages. Notably, a marble conference center, designed by Swiss architects, symbolized the region's revitalization efforts.
Addressing attendees at the conference, Kuhn described the moment as historic, marking the transformation of "minds into vines" and the displacement of landmines from the picturesque area of Karabakh. Once known as the "black garden" for its lush vineyards, Karabakh had been marred by the presence of landmines, but efforts were underway to reclaim its beauty.
As a mother and grandmother, Kuhn expressed her unwavering commitment to supporting Mr. Amud, President of the International Eurasia Press Fund (IEPF), alongside ANAMA and its talented staff. Together, they aimed to realize the vision of turning "Mines to Vines" in Karabakh.
Kuhn concluded her statement with a heartfelt dream - to return in a decade with her grandchildren and celebrate a picnic on the former minefields of Karabakh. It is a dream fueled by hope and a testament to the enduring spirit of resilience and restoration.
