The Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan (AFFA) held another meeting online, Ednews reports.

As a continuation of the issue of the head coach, which was discussed at the meeting of the AFFA Executive Committee held on June 3, 2024, the candidacy of Portuguese specialist Fernando Santos was put forward for the position of head coach of the Azerbaijan national football team.

During the discussions, the importance of forming a national team that demonstrates strong, competitive, and successful play, as well as the necessity of developing children's football in Azerbaijan was noted.

In this regard, Fernando Santos' rich experience as one of the world's renowned football specialists, and his professional achievements, including winning the European Championship with the Portuguese team, have been taken into account, leading to the decision to appoint him as the head coach of the Azerbaijan national team.

Taking into account that the process will not be short-term, but will cover a certain period, the goal of forming a competitive team and a successful performance in the qualifying stage of EURO 2028 has been set before the Portuguese specialist.
