The number of people infected with the mosquito-borne "Chikungunya" virus is rapidly increasing in Jiangmen city, Guangdong province, southern China.
According to EDnews, the region's health authorities announced that as of September 19, a total of 1,714 infections have been recorded. Due to the virus, a Level 3 "Public Health Emergency" has been declared in the province.
It was noted that all recorded cases have been mild, with no severe illnesses or deaths reported.
Symptoms of the disease
Experts state that the "Chikungunya" disease, caused by a virus transmitted by mosquitoes, usually begins with fever and joint pain. The disease can also cause joint swelling, muscle pain, headaches, nausea, fatigue, and skin rashes.
It should be noted that "Chikungunya" was first identified in Africa in 1952, and more than half a million people have been infected since then.
In recent days, the virus has re-emerged in Indian Ocean countries, China, and Europe. The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a warning regarding the fight against the virus.
