European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said on Monday that the attempted coup in Russia by the Wagner Group showed that Russia's war in Ukraine is "cracking its power."
"It's more important than ever to continue to support Ukraine because what happened this weekend showed that going against Ukraine is cracking Russian power," Borrell stated and stressed the bloc's foreign ministers are set to approve a new aid package for Kiev worth €3.5 billion. The EU official added that the bloc is "closely monitoring" the situation in Russia following the Wagner Group crisis.
Over the weekend, the Wagner Group took control of military headquarters in several Russian cities, but its leader Yegveny Prigozhin later agreed to retreat and leave for Belarus, while Moscow dropped the criminal case against him.
