The European Union (EU) fully supports the current President of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, who is facing an attempted coup in the country, Ednews informs.
“I spoke to President Mohamed Bazoum and assured him of the EU's full support. We strongly condemn any attempt to destabilize Niger,” the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, tweeted after talking to Bazoum on the phone.
On the morning of July 26, the Presidential Guard of Niger detained President Bazoum at his residence in the country's capital, Niamey. The Presidential Guard blocked access to Bazoum's residence and denied the negotiators' request to release him. According to media reports, the reason for the rebellion was that Bazoum raised the issue of dismissing the commander of the presidential guard, General Omar Tchiani.
