CIA Director William Burns (pictured) contacted Russia after the attempted Wagner Group rebellion in the country in order to assure Moscow the United States had nothing to do with the mutiny, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing officials familiar with the matter.
According to the report, Burns spoke with Russian Foreign Intelligence Service Director Sergey Naryshkin and told him: "The US wasn’t involved. This is an internal Russian matter," one source stated.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the US ambassador to Moscow, Lynne Tracy, told Russian officials that the US "has nothing to do" with the rebellion.
