Christopher Nolan’s epic biographical thriller Oppenheimer and Jesse Armstrong’s satirical drama series Succession earned top honours at the 81st Golden Globes, marking Hollywood’s star-studded kickoff to its annual awards season, Ednews reports citing Vanity Fair.

While Oppenheimer was named Best Movie (Drama), in the television categories, Succession took home the award for Best Drama.

In addition to its Best Picture win, Oppenheimer also triumphed in other categories, with awards for Best Director (Christopher Nolan), Best Male Actor (Cillian Murphy) and Best Supporting Male Actor (Robert Downey Jr). The film also received accolades for Best Score – Motion Picture.

Succession achieved another notable feat with three wins for its cast members: Best Male Actor (Kieran Culkin), Best Female Actor (Sarah Snook) and Best Supporting Male Actor (Matthew Macfadyen). Meanwhile, Lily Gladstone earned the Best Female Actor (Drama) award for her compelling performance in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. The 81st Golden Globes were held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.

In a surprising turn of events, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things emerged as the unexpected winner in the Best Comedy or Musical category, overcoming Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. Poor Things also won for Emma Stone’s performance as Bella, a Victorian woman experiencing a surreal life and sexual awakening. Billie Eilish O’Connell and Finneas O’Connell’s “What Was I Made For?” won the award for Best Song – Motion Picture, giving some respite to Barbie, which also won the first-ever Golden Globe for cinematic and box-office success.

While the American show Beef, created by Lee Sung Jin, bagged the Golden Globe for Best Limited Series, Anthology Series or Television Motion Picture, Christopher Storer’s The Bear was named Best Musical/Comedy Series.
