Every year, April 30 is celebrated as International Jazz Day around the world. Declared by UNESCO in 2012, this day is remembered by concert programs held in jazz-loving countries around the world. The significant day is celebrated annually in about 190 countries around the world.
“EDnews” reports that on the occasion of International Jazz Day, round tables, master classes on jazz improvisations, as well as various events related to the theme of jazz are organized. These events are continued with a special concert program in Congo Square in New Orleans, which is considered the homeland of jazz.
Azerbaijani jazz has a unique place in the world. This is once again proven by the interest in international jazz festivals held in our country. The foundation of Azerbaijani jazz, built on American jazz and mugham music, was laid by the State Pop Orchestra, known as “State Jazz”, created by Niyazi and Tofig Guliyev in the late 1930s.
The second life of pop and jazz music in Azerbaijan began with the “Gaya” ensemble created by Rafig Babayev. This ensemble gained great fame in the former USSR. The era of Vagif Mustafazade can be considered the renaissance of jazz in Azerbaijan. The virtuoso musician created a synthesis of mugham and jazz. After him, his daughter Aziza Mustafazade continues his path and achieves new achievements.
Azerbaijani jazz, built on great foundations, is now developing further in the example of young performers. It is enough to mention the name of Isfar Sarabsky, the winner of the International Montreux Jazz Festival, to witness how the jazz tradition lives in Azerbaijan. Also, such well-known performers as Rain Sultanov, Salman Ganbarov, Emil Afrasiyaboglu, Shahin Novrasli successfully continue these traditions.
