The Council of Europe is hopeful that a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan will be signed soon, Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset said in an interview with Armenian media.
"There has been considerable progress in recent months in the peace process between Baku and Yerevan. Our goal is to continue facilitating discussions between the sides to reach the final stage—signing the treaty. I hope this happens as soon as possible," Berset said.
He noted that he had discussed the peace process with both Azerbaijani and Armenian authorities.
He also mentioned that the issue was recently discussed in Türkiye (in April).
Berset acknowledged that although the peace process has somewhat slowed down recently, it is still moving forward. "This momentum must be maintained in order to reach the signing of the agreement," the Council of Europe Secretary General added.
On March 13, Azerbaijan and Armenia agreed on the text of a peace agreement. Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov stated that Armenia accepted Azerbaijan’s proposals regarding the last two unresolved points. He added that Baku now expects Yerevan to amend its constitution, which still contains territorial claims against Azerbaijan, and to support the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group.
