Spain on Thursday expressed deep concern over Iran’s decision to suspend its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), calling on Tehran to fulfill its international nuclear obligations.

In a statement, the Spanish Foreign Ministry reiterated its strong support for the IAEA and its Director General Rafael Grossi and urged Iran to comply with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty's (NPT) Safeguards Agreement.

“We reiterate our strong support for the IAEA and its Director General. We call on Iran to comply with its obligations under its Safeguards Agreement, which is essential to ensure the integrity of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty,” the ministry said.

Iran’s parliament passed legislation last week to suspend cooperation with the IAEA.

That was after growing tensions between Tehran and the UN nuclear watchdog over monitoring access and transparency following recent military confrontations with Israel and the US.

A 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran began on June 13 when Israel launched air strikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites. Tehran responded with missile and drone attacks, while the US bombed three Iranian nuclear sites.

The conflict ended under a US-sponsored ceasefire that took effect on June 24.
