As EDnews reported that Iranian and Russian officials have signed an agreement on the long-stalled construction of a railway connecting the cities of Astara and Rasht in Iran.
The North-South International Transport Corridor (ITC) connects Russia with the countries of the Caspian basin, the Persian Gulf, Central, South and Southeast Asia. The western route of the corridor, which includes Russia, Iran and Azerbaijan, had a missing link of 162 kilometres between Rasht and Astara.
Putin noted earlier that the project is interesting not only to Russia and Iran, but also to all participants of global trade as from the viewpoint of logistics this will be a considerable addition to the Suez Canal and Black Sea straits.
In his turn, Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi said: This agreement is undoubtedly an important and strategic step for cooperation between Tehran and Moscow.
Western sanctions against Russia and Iran have pushed the two countries to strengthen their political and economic relations. Both countries say that the sanctions are not justified.
How can this agreement influence to the region, especially Azerbaijan?
Former CEO and one of the founders of the Chamber of Commerce, businessperson Dr. Arie Mishne, answered this question at EDnews.
Dr. Arie Mishne think that the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev defined to be and to develop a global transportation hub as one of county’ target:
"To accomplish North-South ITC is part of this target. And Azerbaijan has invested serious efforts to make it."
According to him, to realize China- Kazakhstan- Azerbaijan/Nakhichevan - Turkey and so on corridor is more important for world logistics chains.
