In recent times, in the Transcaucasian region France has, in regards to its relations with Azerbaijan and Armenia, taken sides with the latter. However, during the 30-year occupation, he played the role of a mediator under the co-chairmanship of the Minsk Group of the OSCE. How can this sudden transition be explained, especially if we take into account the illegitimate position previously held by Armenia? Can we mention the religion factor here?
French political scientist and chairman of the International Social Sciences Studies and Reflections Group (GERISS) operating in Paris, Dr. Naim Asas emphasized in his statement to Ednews that, the Armenian diaspora in France as one of the main factors affecting the interests of Paris in the region:
"France, historically a mediator in the South Caucasus region, has recently increased its support to Armenia. This development can be attributed to several factors. With an active Armenian diaspora in France, the historical and cultural ties between France and Armenia are undeniable. However, this transition was undoubtedly influenced by recent geopolitical dynamics, especially the conflicts in the Karabakh region. Thus, French diplomacy adapts to the changing realities in the region, although this raises questions about foreign policy and balance to crises."
The expert believes that despite the fact that France is a secular state, the perception of Armenia among the public is formed due to religious elements:
"France, as a secular state, should theoretically not allow religious considerations to influence its foreign policy. Nevertheless, it is undeniable that public perceptions can be affected by religious elements. Armenia, which is predominantly Christian, and Azerbaijan, which is predominantly Muslim, represent different religious backgrounds that could subtly influence sympathy and support among the French population. This phenomenon could have indirect repercussions on certain aspects of France's foreign policy."
The political scientist cited the "COP29" to be held in Baku and the 2024 Olympics in Paris as the basis for the process of normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and France:
"Anne Hidalgo's comments highlight the importance of international platforms such as COP29 and the 2024 Olympics for diplomatic dialogue. These events create opportunities for less formal interactions, which can be crucial in establishing a solid foundation for Franco-Azerbaijani relations. Such an approach may prove beneficial in fostering lasting peace in the Caucasus. The success of these interactions will largely depend on the mutual willingness of both nations to engage in constructive dialogue and to seek solutions that benefit all parties involved.
