German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas will travel to Tehran on Monday to defend the validity of the nuclear agreement with Iran, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Adebahr said on Friday.
She indicated that Maas will meet his counterpart, Mohammed Sarif, and then travel to the United Arab Emirates and Jordan.
It is a journey towards crisis, Adebahr said, referring to the tense situation created by Washington's withdrawal from the nuclear agreement with Iran.
The spokeswoman added that Maas will appeal for restraint and an end to tensions in the region.
Two weeks ago, one of his closest advisors, Jems Pl'tner, was in Tehran to arrange the trip, which caused annoyance in the United States.
In 2018 Washington withdrew from the nuclear agreement with Iran and tries to pressure Tehran with economic sanctions.
Germany is among the countries seeking to rescue the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Action Plan (JICA).
