Ariana Grande broke YouTube records on Nov. 30 with the premiere of her “thank u, next” music video. Her memeified self-love anthem became the biggest-ever Premiere on YouTube using the site’s Premiere feature.
The pint-sized songstress threw a giant streaming party as a whopping 829,000 viewers tuned in at the same time. A YouTube rep also said that Arianators sent over 516,000 chat messages during the premiere, marking an all-time record for YouTube Premieres.
Her premiere was so popular, it “delayed YouTube comments from posting for a bit,” according to YouTube’s official Twitter page. Comments are currently working, albeit delayed.
The hyper-referential music video spoofs the truest millennial touchstone of cinema: the rom-com. Grande reenacted iconic scenes from Mean Girls, Bring It On, 13 Going on 30 and Legally Blonde with a little help from some high-profile cameos. (Who could play a “cool mom” better than Kris Jenner herself?)
Elsewhere on YouTube, Grande is at the center of a YouTube docuseries called Dangerous Woman Diaries. The first episode is available for free, while the other three episodes require a YouTube Premium subscription.
