David Carrick, who worked as a police officer in London for 17 years, admitted to participating in more than 49 acts of sexual abuse and raping. The incident caused a great scandal in the country. At present, the Britain's top officials have begun to take serious measures to investigate this issue.
Speaking to Ednews, British journalist Neil Watson said that this is actually one of a series of crimes committed by police officers serving in London.
"It has shed light on a culture of misogyny and racism in the Metropolitan police. Last year Wayne Couzens was sentenced to life in prisions for abduction, rape and murder. Police commissioner Cressida Dick had to resign last year over the issue. Currently 1000 cases are being investigated, and the official bodies take it very seriously."
The journalist also said that the mayor of London was greatly shaken by the incident. He noted that serious reforms have been launched in order to increase the disciplinary measure regarding the London police.
"There has been particular condemnation of police policy by London Mayor Sadiq Khan and he has asked for a complete review of police culture and policy to be initiated by Police Commissioner Mark Rowley. This will include an anonymous complaints hotline and anti corruption team," said Watson.
Speaking about the subsequent consequences of the incident, the expert even noted that it would be extremely effective and risky.
"The risk is that we will lose many experienced police officers. However, a police officer who commits crimes is threat to the public and the reverse of what the public should expect from their police officers. New officers who grow up amidst a different ethos will be far superior in protecting the public."
In the end, the journalist said that the arrested policeman could face life imprisonment after long investigations.
"He will be punished very severely, as with any criminal. Despite the fact he pleaded guilty, he can expect a long custodial term and maybe life in jail."
