Six people are dead and more than 200 are injured, according to Jakarta’s governor, after mobs clashed with security forces and set fire to a police dormitory and vehicles in the Indonesian capital following the release of official election results, The Guardian reported.
National Police spokesman Dedi Prasetyo said protests by supporters of an unsuccessful presidential candidate turned violent late on Tuesday and continued through the night. Police said they had arrested 20 protesters.
Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono urged people to stay calm as the police had cleared the area around the dormitory.
“Residents, please proceed with you regular activities,” Argo said as quoted by kompas.com, The Jakarta Post reported.
The National Police and Indonesian Military have deployed around 40,000 personnel to guard the General Elections Commission, Elections Supervisory Agency, Presidential Palace, legislative complex and embassies.
Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan said six people had died and 200 were injured in the violence.
