The Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Dr. Yousef A. Al-Othaimeen expressed deep concern over the statement made by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia during his visit to the occupied territories of the Republic of Azerbaijan on August 5, 2019. The Prime Minister declared the occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region as a territory of Armenia. This statement and Armenia’s actions in violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan disregard the basic international law principles, position of international community and undermine regional peace and security.
The OIC Secretary General referred to the provisions of the United Nations and OIC Charters for peaceful settlement of conflicts, the Helsinki Final Act and resolutions of the UN Security Council 822 (1993), 853 (1993), 874 (1993) and 884 (1993) within the OSCE Minsk Group framework, various OIC Resolutions on the issue and urged the Republic of Armenia to recommit to the peace negotiations with the Republic of Azerbaijan on the basis of the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council for peace settlement of the conflict.
