Amnesty for 20,000 convicts will likely to be granted in Tajikistan on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the constitution, Asia Plus reports citing the Tajik president’s office.
The amnesty for 2,000 defendants and suspects awaiting legal proceedings in pretrial detention facilities is also expected.
The relevant draft law has been submitted to Tajikistan’s lower house of parliament, the statement said.
Amnesty will apply to prisoners with disabilities, cancer, jailed World War II veterans, military deserters, convicts older than 55. The persons serving jail terms for economic crimes will be also pardoned if they paid damages.
