The United States Department of Defense reported that it learned how to overcome the main advantage of the Russian Su-57 ‘fifth-gen’ fighter jet, learned BulgarianMilitary.com, citing Defense News.
As it turned out, the fifth-generation Russian innovative fighter was vulnerable to a 25-year-old radar, which will be modernized and subsequently installed on fifth-generation American fighters F- 35, and probably F-22.
“Unlike the other problems, which are the result of the contractor not meeting technical specifications or the jet not working as planned, this deficiency is on the books even though the jet’s Northrop Grumman-made AN/APG-81 active electronically scanned array radar fulfills its requirements” the author Valerie Insinna said in the article
“Currently, the radar can only illuminate what is directly in front of it when in sea search mode. That performance is not good enough for the Navy, which wants to be able to search a wider area than is currently possible” also she added.
Although this problem can be fixed with software modifications and an upgrade to the radar’s processing power, it will continue to be on the books for some time. According to the program office, “[the] U.S. services agreed to plan for an improved radar mode, which will require the Technology Refresh-1 avionics update, for software release in [calendar year] 2024.”
In fact, this means that after profiling the radar, Russian aircraft can be detected by the American F-35 not only at long distances, but also in a wide radius, which deprives Russian fifth-generation combat aircraft of advantages over the F-35, at least of this nature.
