Turkey’s ambassador to Qatar said on Wednesday that the volume of bilateral trade between Qatar and Turkey was $2 billion in 2019, the Peninsula Qatar news website reported.
The trade between the two countries witnessed a 17 percent decrease from $2.4 billion in 2018, but the decrease is limited due to the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on the global economy, Mehmet Mustafa Göksu said.
“We are proud that Turkish construction companies have significantly contributed to the infrastructure of Qatar,” Göksu said. “The total value of construction projects since 2002 is over $18 billion. Qatar is the seventh largest contract market for Turkey in 2019."
Turkey has sent additional troops and food to the Gulf state following the diplomatic crisis in 2017 when Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt accused Qatar of supporting terrorism, cutting off diplomatic ties and imposing an economic blockade on the country. In return, Qatar has pledged $15 billion in financial aid and investment to Turkey, including up to $3 billion in currency swaps that helped shore up the lira during last year’s currency crisis.
