French citizens mostly in favor of 1st demonstration against pension reform

More than half of all French citizens support the first demonstration planned against pension reform, Ednews reports citing Anadolu Agency.

The opinion poll conducted by Odaxa-Backbone Consulting for the Le Figaro newspaper showed Thursday that 65% are in favor of the first round of demonstrations planned for Jan. 19.

"For the moment, the popular support is high but much less than the start of the Yellow Vests, and slightly less than the previous reform, which was aborted in December 2019," Odaxa General Director Celine Bracq told Le Figaro.

The results show neither strong support nor strict opposition, Le Figaro reported, adding that 52%, most between 50 and 64 years of age, are opposing the draft bill.

While 29% are in favor of the reform, 18%, mostly young people, think they are not informed enough to express an opinion.

It is the increase in the retirement age that generates the most criticism, with 62% opposed.

A total of 76% of respondents think "other forms of reform are possible to ensure the functioning of the retirement system."

The pension reform project, which includes an increase to the retirement age from 62 to 64 in 2030, immediately triggered outrage from workers and unions when the government announced preparations last year.

Several unions called for demonstrations and strikes after Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne revealed details Tuesday.

Starting in 2027, the change will also require at least 43 years of work to be eligible for full pensions, she said.

Borne said the minimum pension would also rise to 85% of the minimum wage, meaning around €1,200 ($1,288) per month.

Another survey conducted by Elabe for French broadcaster, BFMTV, published Wednesday showed 59% rejecting the reform.

A total of 76% of respondents think "other forms of reform are possible to ensure the functioning of the retirement system."

The eight main labor unions issued a statement Tuesday that encouraged a nationwide strike and demonstrations Jan. 19.

The oil branch of the General Confederation of Labor announced Wednesday industrial actions, including walkouts on Jan. 19, 26 and Feb. 6, with a possible extension and a halt to refinery work, according to a union statement.

The draft reform is set to be presented Jan. 23 to the Council of Ministers.
