A seminar called "Heydar Aliyev and world peace: Introduction to landmines" was held in Egypt's "Al-Hivar" (Dialogue) Political and Media Research Center within the framework of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Azerbaijan's National Leader Heydar Aliyev and the World Environment Day.
Ednews informs that speaking at the seminar, our country's ambassador to Egypt, Elkhan Polukhov, gave detailed information about the life and activities of National Leader Heydar Aliyev, his role in history, and his efforts to find a way out of the situation during the occupation of Azerbaijani lands by Armenia. Noting that the Great Leader Heydar Aliyev is remembered for his contributions to peace in many countries of the world, he said that the National Leader ensured that Azerbaijan got out of the difficult stage after gaining independence, and touched on the many efforts he made in the fight against landmines during the years of power, and said that his successes were continued by the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev. E. Polukhov spoke about the danger of landmines still remaining in the lands liberated during the 44-day Patriotic War, and assessed the death and maiming of hundreds of civilians as a result of mine explosions in these areas as a serious crime against humanity.
Umud Mirzayev, President of the International Eurasia Press Fund, Chairman of the Public Council under ANAMA, addressed the participants of the seminar with a video message.
He said that Azerbaijan is one of the largest countries contaminated by landmines.
"In the last 30 years, more than 20 percent of the territory of our country has been occupied. These lands are contaminated with mines. There are approximately 1.5 million landmines in the territory of Azerbaijan. The International Eurasia Press Fund has been participating in the mine safety program in Azerbaijan for 20 years. The group of anti-mine activities of the community, operating within the framework of IEPF, is one of the main organizations in the region engaged in demining."
