Presidential elections have started in Uzbekistan, Ednews reports.
A total of 10,784 polling stations were set up, including 56 polling stations located in 39 countries outside of Uzbekistan. These polling stations opened at 8:00 a.m. local time.
Citizens have the opportunity to vote until 20:00 local time.
Recall that on April 30, Uzbekistan conducted a referendum on constitutional amendments, which resulted in an extension of the presidential term from five years to seven years. According to the laws of Uzbekistan, all citizens above the age of 35 who are proficient in the Uzbek language, have resided in the country for the past ten years, and are nominated by political parties are eligible to participate in the elections.
Current President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, People's Democratic Party candidate Ulughbek Inoyatov, Ecology Party candidate Abdushukur Hamzayev and Justice Social Democracy Party candidate Roba Mahmudova will compete in the elections.
