Members of a separatist group killed 11 people and wounded several others in an overnight attack on a police station in southeastern Iran, Ednews reports via IRNA.
The deputy governor of Sistan and Baluchestan province, Ali Reza Marhemati, told reporters that the attack occurred in the town of Rask, about 1,400 kilometers (875 miles) southwest of Tehran, leaving senior police officers and soldiers dead.
According to state television, the attack was perpetrated by the separatist group Jaish al-Adl, a Salafi Islamist militant organization that operates mainly in the southeastern part of the country. The group has been responsible for several attacks against civilians and the military in the past and claims to fight for the independence of Sistan and Baluchistan province. Iran believes the group is linked to Al Qaeda.
