William Lai, broadly known as Lai Ching-te of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party is set to be announced formally as winner of the polls on Saturday in Taiwan, after getting a key advantage against his opponents in the votes and both parties the Kuomintang with candidate Hou Yu-ih and the Taiwan People's Party's with Ko Wen-je conceding the defeat during speeches.
With almost five million and a half votes casted for Lai (picured) and 98% of calculated ballots, Lai and his running vice president formula Hsiao Bi-khim received 40.2% of the votes, while Hou got left behind by 33.4% or 4,540,100 votes and Ko with 26.4% or 3,591,449.
Although Chinese media have labeled Lai, as a "troublemaker," the current results could be read as a rejection from the Taiwanese on Beijing's weight and their claims against him.
