The head of Chinese diplomacy, Wang Yii, will discuss Taiwan this week in Thailand with Jake Sullivan, national security adviser to US President Joe Biden, China said on Friday, against a backdrop of appeasement between the two powers. Ednews reports the following, referring to Le Figaro.
Sino-American relations have deteriorated in recent years over a number of issues: ties with Taiwan, trade, rivalry in new technologies, the battle for influence in the Asia-Pacific, the South China Sea and human rights. But the two countries seem keen to resume dialogue, with Washington sending several senior officials to Beijing last year and Joe Biden meeting his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in California in November.
"Wang Yi will visit Thailand from 26 to 29 January," Chinese diplomacy said in a statement, adding that he will hold talks with Jake Sullivan during his stay in Bangkok. The Chinese foreign minister "will state China's position on Sino-American relations and the Taiwan question", Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for Chinese diplomacy, said later. "He will exchange views with the American side on international and regional issues of common interest", he added. "This meeting builds on the commitment made by both sides at the November 2023 summit between President Biden and President Xi to maintain strategic communication and manage relations responsibly," the White House said.
