The European Union and the United States protested after the sanctions against María Corina Machado were confirmed, banning her from taking part in the next presidential election at the end of 2024. Ednews reports referring to Liberation.
María Corina Machado, 56, who triumphed in the Venezuelan opposition primary in October with over 90% of the vote, will not be able to stand in the elections scheduled for the second half of 2024: the Supreme Court, which is subservient to the Socialist government, declared her "disqualified for fifteen years" on Friday.
The ruling confirms a previous decision based on alleged administrative irregularities and an accusation of "treason": the figurehead of the right-wing opposition had in fact approved the economic sanctions imposed by the United States against the Chavist regime.
The combative ultraliberal leader reacted on Monday in Caracas, in front of her supporters and a forest of microphones: "Nicolás Maduro is not going to choose the people's candidate, because the people have already chosen their candidate, full stop", she said, before promising: "We are going to win."
