Thursday, the US Air Forces launched strikes at the positions of Iran-backed militant groups in eastern Syria.
Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby said in a statement that the strikes against the Shia-militant groups backed by Iran were directed by President Joseph Biden.
According to him, the strikes destroyed multiple facilities belonging to the number of Iranian-backed militant groups, including Kata’ib Hezbollah (KH) and Kata’ib Sayyid al-Shuhada
Further to the clarification of what message stands behind the attacks of the US, Michael Finkel, Israeli expert on international relations, shared his comments with Eurasia Diary.
Initially, Finkel noted that the strikes were launched by the US military to respond to attacks by Iran-backed militant groups.
“We have to understand that strikes authorised by President Biden were a response to attacks carried out by Iran-backed Shia militants,” he said.
According to his opinion, there are two things that it is important to keep in mind.
“First, such strikes were directed to the promotion of the self-defence of the US army. President Biden cannot ignore the aim of this attack. This is a necessary activity of self-defence. But, it does not mean that he could become Donald Trump,” he said.
“The other important thing is that the strikes carried out by the US army were not directly against Iran. These strikes were against Iran-backed Shia militant groups. And I consider that there is no message to Iran in these attacks. This is just a simple response,” he added.
Israeli expert pointed out that with this attack the Biden administration has just sent a message to Iran-backed militant groups.
“If we are attacked, we will respond. We are not died lion. By the way, this incident will not influence Biden’s decision to reach the nuclear deal with Iran,” he stressed.
Some experts argue that the Biden administration urges Iranian regime to engage in the negotiations on the revival of the nuclear deal through these strikes.
However, the opinion of Israeli expert about this issue is contrary to their arguments.
“I do not think that this incident has anything to do with the nuclear deal contemplated by the Biden administration. Regarding the issue of the nuclear deal, the US can communicate with Iran via diplomatic channels. The allies in Europe help Washington in this regard,” ” he said.
Touching upon the attempts of the US to end Iran’s entrenchment in Syria and Iraq, Finkel said he believed that the Biden administration cannot cause damage to the Iranian presence in Syria and, in the other areas of the Middle East.
“There is no way Biden can end Iranian presence in Syria. He is not doing anything to make it happen. He does not have a plan to attack Iranian forces and Iran-backed militant groups. The only power that actively strikes Iranian forces or Iran-backed militant groups in Syria is Israel,” he added.
