The growing conflict between Ukraine and Russia does not subside. Ukraine, which is embroiled in tensions between the West and Russia and unable to choose a reliable ally, also faces serious domestic problems. The elites in the political sphere are already voicing their hopes for incumbent President Volodymyr Zelensky.
"Ukraine is tired of such internal conflicts," he said. There is no trust in the West. If that happens, the people will have to re-elect Petro Poroshenko in the next elections," a Ukrainian sociologist, who did not want to be named, told Ednews.
Petro Poroshenko, the fifth president of Ukraine in 2014-2019, lost his post for the last time due to treason. He was allegedly involved in the sale of large quantities of coal in eastern Ukraine, which helped finance Russian-backed separatists. Returning home after heavy charges, Poroshenko appeared in court to face charges of high treason.
The former president is the owner of the Roshen confectionery empire and one of the richest businessmen in Ukraine. On Wednesday, Ukraine's judiciary allowed Poroshenko, a member of Ukraine's provincial parliament, to remain free during an investigation, barring him from leaving the country. Several hundred supporters protested in front of the courthouse.
"This is not a victory yet, this is the first step in the right direction," Poroshenko said, adding that the confiscation of his passport had hampered his "political activities."
But in what form do the Poroshenko supporters intend to bring the former leader to power?
Alexander Merejko, a Ukrainian political analyst, told Ednews that the tension had existed since Zelensky came to power.
"Rather, at the beginning of his tenure, there were tensions over the situation in Donbass, the economic crisis caused by the pandemic, or the current threat of a new Russian occupation," he said. Nevertheless, Zelensky was able to overcome most of the existing problems very successfully. By the way, our strategic partnership with Azerbaijan, personal friendship and warm relations between Zelensky and President Ilham Aliyev also played a positive role.
The political scientist also noted that Zelensky was able to implement a number of important reforms that previous presidents did not dare. The political analyst cited land reform as an example.
"Under democratic law, election results can be unpredictable. However, I think that the chances of being re-elected to complete the reforms initiated by Zelensky are very high. In particular, his charisma, energy and popularity among young voters make Zelensky one of the most relevant candidates in the elections. In addition, middle-aged and older people rely more on Zelensky because they see the exact results of his presidency.
