The Alteo plant in southern France, which produces alumina, has come under investigation for dumping toxic waste into the Mediterranean Sea, Ednews informs referring to BFMTV channel.
The plant is suspected of polluting the sea with hazardous substances, “the action or reactions of which led to harmful consequences for flora and fauna,” in the period from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2021, in the municipalities of Gardanne and Cassie.
In 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2020, the prefecture issued permits to the plant to temporarily exceed threshold values so that measures were taken to reduce the volume of liquid emissions. However, the management of the enterprise has not yet done this. According to the Monde newspaper, the concentrations of mercury and arsenic in the discharges were exceeded, and a total of 64 violations by the enterprise were recorded during the period from 2016 to 2021.
