A section of the final declaration from the EU summit in Brussels regarding relations with Türkiye has been disclosed.
Ednews, citing ntv.com, reported that "the EU recognizes a strategic interest in fostering a stable and secure environment in the Eastern Mediterranean, alongside cooperation and mutually beneficial relations with Türkiye ."
The declaration underscored the importance of advancing recommendations outlined in a joint report by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, and the EU Commission in November 2023. These recommendations are to be implemented in a "gradual, proportionate, and reversible" manner, with instructions given to the Committee of EU Permanent Representatives (COREPER), subject to further guidance by the EU Council.
Additionally, "Cyprus emphasizes the significance of resuming and advancing negotiations, which can enhance EU-Turkey cooperation."
During the summit's foreign relations session, the report's recommendations, prepared by Borrell in collaboration with the EU Commission and presented in November 2023, were deliberated in the section pertaining to Turkey.
