Azerbaijan could become a participant in a major international railway project as the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway route gains momentum. This was announced by Azamat Sakiyev, Director General of Kyrgyz Railways, in a recent statement to journalists.According to EDnews, this project is not only of regional importance for Central Asia but is also of strategic value on a global scale:
“A large-scale megaproject of significance to both Central Asia and the entire world has begun in Kyrgyzstan. The project is the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway corridor. In the future, this route is expected to be integrated into broader transport corridors connecting to Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and eventually Europe.”
He noted that Azerbaijan’s potential involvement in the project would bring both economic and geopolitical advantages. To increase interest and participation in the project, we plan to promote this railway route within Azerbaijan.Construction work has already started, and the project is scheduled to be completed by 2030.
“Initial estimates suggest the railway will have a capacity of at least 15 million tons annually. During the initial phase, this figure might start at around five million tons. However, in the long term, we hope to achieve stable transit volumes of approximately 15 million tons,” he added.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the route is its efficiency: it will reduce the transit time between China and Europe to just seven days, offering a faster and more direct alternative to existing trade routes.
