Jose Mourinho once again hit out at his Manchester United players following a 2-1 defeat against Valencia, insisting he wasn’t “surprised” by the result and “didn’t learn anything” from the game.

United missed the opportunity to top Group H – following Juventus’ surprise loss to Young Boys – after a poor display at the Mestalla.

Marcus Rashford came off the bench to score for United, but it proved to be a mere consolation on the night after Carlos Soler’s first-half effort was followed up by a calamitous own goal from Phil Jones.

The Special One aimed another shot at his players after the game, insisting he “expects more” on what was another night to forget for the misfiring Red Devils.

He said: “I didn’t learn anything from this game – at all. Maybe you did (reporter), but not me.

“Nothing that happened surprised me at all, I am not pleased.”

Mourinho stressed that yet again his out-of-favour stars, including Paul Pogba, that were given a run out against the La Liga strugglers had not taken their opportunity.

He added: “I expect more from my players, especially players that week in, week out, they ask why they don’t play, why they don’t start.

“It was a good match to play, without any kind of pressure, in a competition that everyone likes to play in.”

While admitting they only had themselves to blame after blowing the chance to finish winners of their group, Mourinho did stress that qualification to the last 16 represented “a success”

He explained: “Before the game I told the players that, if we win tonight and Juventus win, we did our job; if we don’t win and Juventus doesn’t win, we can blame ourselves.

“But finishing second in this group is a success and I don’t think that finishing first or second – apart from a couple of clubs who are clearly much better than the others – [means that] the draw will be significantly different.”
