An earthquake of a 7.7-magnitude struck southeast of the Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia, on Friday, EDnews informs that the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported on it.
Following the strike, Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami alert for New Caledonia, Fiji and Vanuatu. The quake hit at a depth of 37.7 kilometers.
In the tsunami threat forecast it was noted that "hazardous tsunami waves are possible within 1000 km of the epicenter" along the coasts of the aforementioned areas.
