The United States sanctioned two officers of Russia's Federal Security Service over their "malign" influence in elections worldwide, including in the US, Ednews reports.
"The Kremlin continues to target a key pillar of democracy around the world — free and fair election. The United States will not tolerate threats to our democracy, and today's action builds on the whole of government approach to protect our system of representative government, including our democratic institutions and elections processes," the Treasury Department noted in its statement.
The sanctioned officers are Yegor Sergeyevich Popov and Aleksei Borisovich Sukhodolov, who are said to be responsible for conducting "foreign malign influence" for Russia.
