Canada expanded its sanctions against the Russian Federation on Friday, including three entities and 15 new individuals.
According to the Canadian government, the entities are two district courts supervised by the Moscow City Court, which has been implicated in sentencing and imprisoning opposition leaders such as Vladimir Kara-Murza and Alexei Navalny. Moreover, the individuals are members of the Russian security and justice branches, including senior members of the judiciary and the investigative committee, also implicated in human rights abuses against Russian opposition leaders.
"By imposing these sanctions, Canada, in coordination with the United Kingdom and the United States, is placing further costs on Russian officials in the justice and security sectors who are engaged in these human rights abuses and who are complicit in Vladimir Putin's unjustifiable and illegal war in Ukraine," Global Affairs Canada said in a statement.
