A delegation sent by the Economic Community of West African States met with Niger's ousted President Mohamed Bazoum and with the country's current military leader General Abdourahmane Tchiani, a spokesperson for Nigeria's President Bola Ahmed Tinubu confirmed on Saturday. The ECOWAS delegation that held the two separate meetings was led by former Nigerian military head of state General Abdulsalami Abubakar.
Tchiani said on a different occasion that the military leadership does not want to "confiscate power" and that it is working on a transition that would not last more than three years.
Yesterday, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security Abdel-Fatau Musah revealed that a "mediation mission" could travel to Niger, but warned the alliance is prepared for a potential military intervention as well.
