Russia vetoed a resolution at the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday that sought to extend sanctions on Mali for another year. The resolution was put forward by France and the United Arab Emirates.
China abstained from the vote, while other UNSC members voted in favor. The sanctions against Mali were instituted in 2017 and remained in place following coups in 2020 and 2021. The current regime is supported by the Russian private military company Wagner Group.
