MP Konul Nurullayeva: COP29 will rally nations worldwide to combat climate change

Politics 12:25 16.05.2024

The unanimous support to Azerbaijan as the host of COP29 demonstrates that our country's leadership and efforts in solving the problem of climate change on a national, regional and global scale are accepted. By hosting COP29, Azerbaijan is committed to further promoting global solidarity in addressing climate change issues. All efforts are aimed at contributing remarkably to this urgent work. As Mr. President Ilham Aliyev said, we see this as an opportunity to contribute to the practical solution of the most urgent issue in the international arena, Member of Parliament (Milli Majlis) of Azerbaijan Konul Nurullayeva emphasized during her statement to Ednews.

According to her COP29 will be a force that unites North, South, East and West, mobilizing the international community to make progress on halting global warming:

"Climate finance will be an important part of the negotiations at COP29. We must work together constructively to agree on the "New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance" at COP29. The COP29 Presidency is working with a wide range of partners, including multilateral financial institutions, the private sector, and the financial services industry, to strengthen climate finance and achieve the support we need. In this crucial decade of climate action, it is significant that everyone does their part.

Of course, the financial services industry is needed to deepen green capital markets. This will allow us to create climate-positive economic models in order to make sure that protecting the planet pays off.
Relevant regulatory and legal acts are adopted for the development of the "green energy" industry in our country; the declaration of Karabakh and East Zangezur economic regions, and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic as "green energy" zones is also an integral part of this strategy. By 2030, the share of renewable sources in electricity production in Azerbaijan will reach 30%.

Azerbaijan, together with its foreign partners, has started implementing large-scale projects for the development of the renewable energy sector.  The Organizing Committee, established by the Decree of Mr. President Ilham Aliyev, carries out relevant technical and organizational measures related to the realization of the global event. It is known that climate change is a global challenge that transcends national borders and is a real threat today. So it's time to act bigger and faster. Climate adaptation will be critical in the global response to climate change. Damage mitigation and adaptation require higher levels of financial commitment. Coordination of efforts to respond to loss and damage is essential. As part of this cooperation, one of the main goals is to significantly increase international cooperation to stimulate ambitions in the next round of Nationally Determined Contributions. In this context, the Tripartite mechanism established within the framework of the COP between the UAE, Azerbaijan, and Brazil is a very successful step. As Mr. President Ilham Aliyev also declared, being together in this trio creates synergy, coordination, and forecasting.

We are working at COP29 to promote an inclusive process that delivers inclusive results. Only through an inclusive COP can we make real progress. Focusing on the collective interest is critical to combating the climate crisis. Young people and NGOs should move forward together in solidarity for the sake of a green world. As the host country of COP29, Azerbaijan is leading the way as we put climate action at the center of our national plans. Azerbaijan has made green development one of its main priorities. With the declaration of 2024 as the "Year of Solidarity for a Green World" in our country, climate-related action has been promoted at the national level and beyond its borders. It is no coincidence that today Azerbaijan is a regional leader in the transition to green energy. Many countries consider COP29 as an opportunity to learn Azerbaijan's experience in holding major environmental events on a global scale. At the same time, our country is considered as an example of a successful transition to alternative energy sources.

In general, hosting COP29 is the utmost responsibility for Azerbaijan. As Mr. President Ilham Aliyev stated in the climate dialogue, we should not only organize a good event, but also achieve good results."
