The Taiwanese government said on Sunday that 2,868 people on the island were evacuated from their homes ahead of the expected landfall of Typhoon Haikui.
Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen's office urged people to avoid going outside, especially climbing up mountains, going to the coast, going fishing and engaging in water sports. Furthermore, local airlines, UNI Air and Mandarin Airlines, canceled all flights and the Civil Aeronautics Administration noted that 37 international flights were also canceled on Sunday.
Haikui, which is expected to hit Taiwan's southeast later in the day, is the first typhoon set to hit the island in the past four years, according to Tsai's office.
