The United States government is considering introducing rules under which technology companies would have to disclose information about customers using their cloud computing services, Semafor reported on Friday, citing unidentified sources briefed on an upcoming executive order on artificial intelligence.
The US Commerce Department would require such firms to report a customer buying cloud computing resources over a predetermined threshold, comparable to the "know-your-customer" verification standards in banking, according to the report.
The aim of the new regulations would be to preemptively detect potential AI threats, especially if they are connected to foreign countries and could later result in considering computing power as a "national resource," it was said in the report.
