The United States welcomes Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and the opposition represented by the Unitary Platform's (PU) decision to return to dialogue, the State Department's spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a written statement.
"Along with likeminded partners and other friends of Venezuela, the United States will continue its efforts to unite the international community in support of the Venezuelan-led negotiation process," Miller's statement read. The talks between Maduro's administration and the opposition will be held in Barbados on Tuesday, Norway's embassy in Mexico previously announced, with the Scandinavian country as a mediator.
The crisis in Venezuela began after the 2018 presidential election, in which Maduro and his rival Juan Guaido claimed victory. The negotiations between the opposing sides began in 2019 but were put on hold subsequently due to disagreements.
