More than 17,000 people have been evacuated from the flood zone to temporary camps in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, which is experiencing heavy rains, said deputy head of the local administration, Shiv Das Meena, Ednews informs referring to TASS.
“To date, we have created 160 relief camps, and about 17,000 people are accommodated in these camps. About 34,000 food packages have been delivered to people, but now we cannot reach some villages because the water level has not yet subsided,” he said.
He noted that about 1,300 people, including personnel of the Navy, Air Force and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were involved in relief and evacuation operations.
Authorities are using nine helicopters to deliver 13.5 tons of relief supplies to remote affected areas. At the same time, heavy downpours in Tamil Nadu continue, with Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Tenkasi and Kanyakumari districts particularly affected.
