Taiwan will place its military forces on "high alert" in January before and after the presidential elections are held as tensions between Taipei and Beijing rise, Colonel Luo Zhengyu, intelligence officer of the Joint Intelligence Research Center of the Ministry of National Defense's Intelligence Office said on Wednesday.
According to the intelligence officer, the Taiwanese army is closely monitoring China's actions that could be used to disrupt the general elections, which are scheduled to take place on January 13, and is prepared to respond accordingly when needed.
Over the past few days, Taiwan detected several weather balloons suspected to belong to China flying over the Taiwan Strait. The island also reported Beijing's increased military jet activity along its air defense identification zone (ADIZ).
