Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs shared in a notice on Thursday that it has raised concerns with the Japanese embassy over Japan's joint military drills with the United States and Australia on the island of Hokkaido.
"We indicated to the Japanese side that we consider such provocative activities involving extra-regional states as a potential threat to the security of the Russian Federation," given the proximity of the island to Russia's border, the ministry noted.
Tokyo's "irresponsible" could lead to tensions escalating in Northeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific region, the ministry further warned, adding that Moscow will take measures to boost its defense capabilities.
