Ednews reprints the article "Step of Recognition from Russia" by the Member of the Parliament of Azerbaijan, Ph.D. Javanshir Feyziev:
"Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the Alley of Martyrs as part of his state visit to Azerbaijan. He laid a wreath at the Eternal Flame complex in memory of the sons of the Motherland who gave their lives for the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. This, in my opinion, was one of the most important steps taken by the head of the Russian state during his current visit to Baku. In essence, this was a recognition of the erroneousness and criminality of the actions of the leadership of the USSR and personally of the first and last president of the USSR, Mikhail Gorbachev, concerning Azerbaijan. It was Gorbachev who gave the order for the entry of Soviet troops into Baku in January 1990. As a result of that punitive operation, 170 citizens of our republic of different nationalities died. These were old people, women, children. In fact, with his today's step, Vladimir Putin condemned this crime. In addition, he showed respect for the memory of the martyrs who gave their lives for the restoration of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
And this was also a recognition of the criminality of the wrong policies of the leadership of the USSR and Mikhail Gorbachev personally, through whose fault the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict flared up. In general, assessing not only and not so much the fact and results of the visit of the Russian President to Baku, I state the obvious - the brilliant foreign policy line of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev is being implemented. Our country, small in scale, plays a vital role not only in the South Caucasus, but also in Central Asia. Azerbaijan has built pragmatic relations with both Russia and the EU, ensuring the energy security of the Old World. Azerbaijan opposes all plans of external forces to plunge our region into the abyss of controlled chaos. We must appreciate this, and future generations of Azerbaijani citizens will definitely thank us for this."
