The Niger military warned that they would kill detained President Mohamed Bazoum if there is any military intervention carried out by outside parties, the Associated Press reported on Thursday citing two Western officials.
According to a Western military official, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, the junta relayed this message to United States Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland during her visit to the country, which took place last week.
Meanwhile, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) shared in a statement that it wants to deploy a "standby force" in order to "restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger," giving, however, no details on when this deployment could take place.
